GSMBC LEVEL 1-4 CERTIFICATIONS

For nearly 20 years, this SYNDICATE has contributed to the advancement of global standards in mountain bike coaching

GSMBC Certifications are recognized by insurance providers and industry experts globally, including top-tier organizations such as Whistler Mountain Bike Park & Silver Star Bike Park.

    • Certifications are a way to assess specific skill sets within coaches, such as social skills (how well they connect with and adapt the lesson to each, unique student), technical skills (how well they understand and demonstrate riding techniques) and teaching skills (goal setting, lesson planning and communication skills) to ascertain their abilities to deliver the three pillars of teaching: safety, engagement and progression. The better the coach the stronger these skill sets become, enabling a higher degree of execution within each pillar.

    • Certifications are in important part of setting and maintaining industry standards so instructors and coaches have a clear pathway for their professional development and training, while providing employers a clear understanding of what skills coaches do or don’t have, what they can or can’t teach, should they choose to hire them.

    • Lower the entry barrier to mountain biking, making the sport more inclusive, safer and easier for everyone to experience. Regardless of age, gender, socio-economic background, or personal circumstances, riding a bike outdoors is something we feel everyone should experience!

    • Healthier, happier people and communities. Riding bikes outdoors is key to building emotional and physical health. Mountain bike coaches play a key in role in their communities in helping kids and adults get active and lead a healthier lifestyle.

    • A more professional industry where lessons, coaching programs and coaches provide better services, increasing the value and public perception of mountain bike lessons.

    • Higher quality coaches using more consistent teaching methods, allowing students to learn and progress more easily and more safely.

    • The public trust the value of mountain bike coaching more as lessons are improved but also incorporate more consistent methodologies to reduce confusion and frustration.

    • Reduced injury rates when learning new skills or refining old skills, reducing the outdated image that mountain biking is an ‘extreme’ sport. People can do extreme things on mountain bikes, but this represents a very small component within the entire, global sport.

  • We have separated certifications from courses to clarify their roles within the coach education system:

Courses are training programs, offered in person or online, that provide the essential knowledge and skills for coaches to develop to the next level.

Certifications are credentials awarded only when a coach demonstrates the required skill competencies during specific assessments conducted as part of the course.

While certifications are often achieved through courses, this distinction emphasizes the real value of courses: the training, knowledge, and skill development they provide. Certifications are important, but the primary focus should be on the growth and expertise gained during the course.

For example, earning the Level 1 Certification requires meeting the standards in the Intermediate Coach Training Courses and demonstrating proficiency in coaching and riding skill assessments.

For Level 2, 3, and 4 Certifications, GSMBC takes a modular approach allowing multiple training programs as part of each certification.

This approach combines the simplicity of a linear certification pathway with the benefits of modular elements, creating a versatile, diverse, and highly effective training system for mountain bike coaches. We strive to offer the best educational experiences in the world.
