GSMBC CODE OF ETHICS
The Global Syndicate of Mountain Bike Coaches (GSMBC) is dedicated to fostering a community of excellence, integrity, and passion within the mountain biking industry. Guided by a human-centric, holistic approach, our mentors play a vital role in empowering coaches to inspire others while prioritizing safety, inclusivity, and the spirit of mountain biking. This Code of Ethics reflects the values that underpin GSMBC and provides a framework for mentors to lead by example in training and certifying coaches.
1. Respect for Participants
Equality, Empathy and Dignity: Mentors are entrusted with the responsibility of treating every participant with dignity, fairness, and respect. Whether working with students, candidates, or colleagues, mentors must embrace diversity and reject discrimination in any form, including that based on race, gender, skill level, religion, beliefs, or identity.
Creating an Inclusive Space: The outdoors is for everyone. Mentors should actively foster a welcoming and inclusive environment where individuals of all abilities and backgrounds feel valued, respected, and empowered to grow as coaches and riders.
2. Professional Competence
Commitment to Growth: Mentors are role models in the pursuit of continuous improvement. They are expected to actively engage in ongoing education, skill development, and self-reflection to stay at the forefront of best practices in mountain bike coaching.
Safety as a Core Value: Mentors must prioritize the safety and well-being of every participant by assessing and managing risks based on the student’s abilities, the specific situation, and the terrain. They should only undertake responsibilities for which they are fully prepared and ensure their actions align with the highest standards of safe instruction.
3. Self-Awareness and Commitment
Understanding Influence: Mentors must recognize how their personal attitudes, experiences, and values shape their coaching style and interactions. They should strive to approach each participant with empathy, adaptability, and a commitment to their unique growth journey.
Dedication to Participants: Mentors have a responsibility to support participants in realizing their full potential. This includes providing instruction that is clear, accessible, and tailored to individual needs while maintaining patience, encouragement, and professionalism.
4. Harassment and Relationships
Upholding Professional Boundaries: Mentors must maintain appropriate boundaries with participants and avoid any form of sexual intimacy, understanding the power dynamics inherent in their role. This applies to both adult and minor participants.
Zero Tolerance for Harassment: GSMBC enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy for harassment of any kind. This includes verbal, physical, or online misconduct, as well as inappropriate comments, gestures, or the abuse of power for personal gain.
5. Integrity
Honesty in Representation: Mentors must accurately represent their qualifications, experience, and affiliations. Any misrepresentation undermines trust and is considered unethical.
Resolving Conflicts Professionally: Mentors should address disputes or misunderstandings constructively, modelling the collaborative and respectful approach expected in the coaching community.
6. Honouring the Spirit of Mountain Biking
Ambassadors of the Sport: Mentors are stewards of mountain biking culture and community. They should embody the values of respect, camaraderie, and a deep appreciation for the outdoor environment.
Fostering Collaboration: Mentors are encouraged to build strong relationships with resorts, trail operators, and fellow coaches, promoting unity and professionalism within the industry.
Respect for Peers: Mentors must refrain from publicly criticizing or undermining colleagues, participants, or organizations. Constructive feedback should be shared respectfully and privately, ensuring the focus remains on growth and collaboration.
7. Responsibilities of GSMBC Mentors
Working Together: Mentors should maintain a spirit of cooperation with GSMBC staff, course providers, and stakeholders to ensure the success of training programs.
Adherence to Methodology: Mentors must deliver instruction aligned with GSMBC’s up-to-date methods, reflecting a commitment to quality and consistency.
Course Delivery and Commitment: Mentors must honour their commitments to course schedules and participants. Their dedication to providing engaging, well-organized, and professional training experiences is essential to the GSMBC mission.
8. Scope of Engagement
Focusing on Certification Standards: Mentors must operate within their designated role of instructing and evaluating coaching candidates based on GSMBC’s established standards. Their work should remain focused on certifying members and supporting their development at the appropriate level.
