Certifications vs. Training: Understanding Their Roles in Coach Education
Instructor Training - Coach Education… development & assessment
At GSMBC, we distinguish between certifications and training to clarify their respective roles within the coach education system.
What Is Training?
Training programs, offered both in person and online, provide coaches with the essential knowledge and skills needed to advance to the next level. These courses focus on hands-on experience, skill development, and gaining a deeper understanding of mountain biking techniques and strategies.
What Are Certifications?
Certifications are awarded when a coach demonstrates proficiency in the required skill competencies through specific assessments conducted during the training course. These assessments take place during the course itself, meaning coaches don’t need to return later to take a separate exam. While certifications are often achieved through training courses, the real value lies in the training process itself—gaining knowledge, refining skills, and building expertise.
The Focus on Growth
While certifications are important, the primary focus should always be on the personal growth and expertise gained during training. For instance, earning the Level 1 Certification requires meeting the standards in the Intermediate Coach Training Course and demonstrating proficiency in both coaching and riding skill assessments.
Modular Certification Approach
At GSMBC, we take a modular approach for higher-level certifications—Level 2, 3, and 4. These certifications allow coaches to complete multiple training programs as part of their certification. This approach combines the simplicity of a linear certification pathway with the flexibility and versatility of modular elements, ensuring that coaches receive a diverse and effective training experience.
Striving for Excellence
Our goal is to provide the best educational experiences in the world. By offering a well-structured, modular certification pathway, we aim to create highly skilled coaches who are prepared for the ever-evolving mountain bike industry.
